Four Bridges Constructed by CRHIC Win International Bridge Awards in 2020

The IBC (International Bridge Conference) is a prestigious international academic event dedicated to bridge engineering. Sponsored by the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP), it boasts global influence in the realm of bridge engineering. Inaugurated in 1988, the annual IBC Awards has been hailed as the “Nobel Prize for Bridges.”

At present, it consists of seven awards items. There are the George S. Richardson Medal, the Gustav Lindenthal Medal, the Arthur G. Hayden Medal, the Abba G. Lichtenstein Medal, the Eugene C. Figg Jr. Medal, the Award of Merit—Railroad Bridge and the Super Project Award.

With a total length about 50km, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is the world’s largest cross-sea bridge that connects Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao, and also one of the most complex and highest standard projects in the history of China’s transportation construction. UK’s Guardian hailed it as one of the “seven wonders of the modern world”. Subsidiary companies of CRHIC have made their respective contributions to the bridge construction. China Railway Shanhaiguan Bridge Group Co., Ltd. (CRSBG) is responsible for 180,000 tons of steel structure manufacture at section CB01, the biggest bid section of the bridge steel structure project, China Railway Baoji Bridge Group Co., Ltd. (CRBBG) undertakes manufacturing for more than 40,000 tons of steel girder and steel tower, China Railway Science and Industry Group Co., Ltd. (CRSIG) specially develops transportation equipment for the bridge to serve removing, transshipment, transportation and loading of steel box girders and develops the 2,000t gantry crane, and CRSBG and China Railway Jiujiang Bridge Engineering Co., Ltd.(CRJBE) manufacture the 2,000t gantry crane for the bridge.

The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the first double-deck highway-railway combined bridge designed and constructed by China. It represents an important achievement in Chinese economic construction dated 1960s and an important milestone in Chinese bridge construction.

Starting from October 28, 2016, the highway section of the bridge was fully closed for 26-month-long maintenance and renovation, aiming to restore its original appearance, improve the safety and durability of its structure and better serve the public.

CRSBG undertakes the bridge steel structure manufacturing work for both the original bridge and the renovated bridge.

The New Shougang Bridge spanning the Yongding River is measured 1.35km long, with the main bridge being 639m long, the main span 280m long, the high tower 129m high and the low tower 76m high. It is the bridge with the largest span in Beijing and the widest steel bridge in China.

CRBBG undertakes the manufacturing and installation of 45,000 tons of steel girders and towers for the bridge.

The Wuhan Yangsigang Yangtze River Bridge is the first double-deck highway bridge on the Yangtze River and the double-deck highway suspension bridge with the world’s largest span, with the main span of 1,700 meters and no pier in the middle of the river.

CRSBG takes charge of the steel structure manufacturing of the anchoring system for the Wuchang Side and the Hanyang Side; CRSIG completes the steel box girder manufacturing and installation of the approach bridge; CRJBE leads the development of four cable cranes with the largest lifting capacity in China, i.e. LZD900 Cable Crane.
