CRHIC’s Shield Pipe-Jacking Machine Ushers in New Tunnel Construction Method

On March 22, Shield Pipe-Jacking Machine jointly manufactured by China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd. under CRHIC and Zhengzhou Municipal Engineering Corporation successfully drove through the 900m tunnel of high voltage transmission line relocation project in Longhu area, Zhengzhou, Henan Province. This is the first application of 'shield jacking construction method' in central China, marking a breakthrough in both new construction method and new field.

This tunnel is an ultra-long distance power tunnel project rarely seen in Zhengzhou. In the face of many unfavorable construction conditions such as ultra-long haul, ultra-large pipe diameter, large buried depth and quicksand layer, traditional construction method cannot accommodate the construction requirements. To address the project challenges, China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd. together with Zhengzhou Municipal Engineering Corporation, proposed the idea of 'pipe jacking + shield tunneling' and developed a new mechanical tunnel construction equipment- Shield Pipe-Jacking Machine.

Since its application in December 2021, Shield Pipe-Jacking Machine performed well in various aspects, showing high construction efficiency with the maximum daily advance of 42.5 meters. This innovative application of 'pipe jacking + shield tunneling' construction opens up a new mechanized construction model in underground municipal pipe network, which can also be used in the construction of urban drainage, electricity, gas and other underground pipe network. It works out a new path for underground space development.
